Abstract
To observe the effect of peritoneal adhesion on small bowel transit time, a studt was done
from July 1969 to Dec. 1970 at the Department of General Surgery, Taegu Military Hospital.
A total of 280 small bowel studies of adult hospital patients was surveyed. From these, 154
cases were those ho had had abdominal surgery, and 126 cases who had had no previous abdo
minal surgery and no gastrointestinal complaints were selected for evaluation of normak transit
time.
The results were as follows;
1. In the control group, the small bowel transt time tanged from 30 minutes to 6 hours and
the mean transit time was 220 minutes. The mean transit time in the abdominal surgery group
was 297 minutes and 77 minutes longer than that of the control group.
2. The transit time was compared between various surgical groups, revealing the shortest
transit time being similar to the control group in the appendectomy group and the longest
transit time in the intestinal perforation due to typhoid fever.
3. In barium study we observed various signs of peritoneal adhesion such as distended isolated
loop, multiple stenotic segments and displacement of intestinal loops in one side of the abdom
inal cavity.
Some of the factors which may contribute to the small bowel transit time have been briefly
discussed.
